THE YOUNG DANTE AND THE ONE LOVE
with HAZEL MARSHALL
SUNDAY MARCH 9TH 2014
10am – 4.30pm
at PAX LODGE
Comedies – happy endings – are true to life itself. Some people scorn the happy ending, denying life after death. Hearing only the dark news of the broadcaster, our inner ear is deaf to the song of the angels. Yet we are called to the inner certainty that all shall be well. If we will pay the price, we may choose meaning in the face of every disaster.
Beatrice, his great love, became for Dante his soul, his inspiration, his muse, his love for life and beyond it. He met her as a child, though rarely seeing her again until her early death. In the three books of the ‘Divine Comedy’, Dante is led by the poet Virgil, his friend and mentor, on his impassioned journey into Hell, up through Purgatory and finally to the gates of Heaven. It is Beatrice who finally takes him into Paradise.
As we make the journey with him, we remember Dante, the living man, for whom, as for us, the darkness of the pit, the clarity and hard work of purgation, and the intuitions of bliss are present all at once, consciously or unconsciously.
